A Fast-Growing, Resilient Classic with Magnificent Autumn Color
Introduced from Eastern Europe in the 17th century, Acer platanoides (Norway Maple) is a magnificent, much under-planted tree that brings instant structure, shade, and seasonal drama to larger gardens and open landscapes. This large, vigorous deciduous tree grows quickly to form a broad, spreading habit with an exceptionally dense canopy, making it an excellent choice for a specimen tree or a natural windbreak.
The seasonal display begins in early spring, before the leaves emerge, when clusters of delicately scented yellow flowers appear on bare branches. These flowers mature into the classic paired, winged seeds (samaras) by autumn, uniquely arranged so the wings lie in an almost straight line. Summer brings a lush canopy of large, classic 5-pointed maple leaves that transform into a sea of vibrant yellow and occasionally deep red as autumn arrives. Exceptionally tough, the Norway Maple handles urban pollution and shaded conditions with ease.

| Planting & Care Tips | Thanks to its robust nature, the Norway Maple requires very little maintenance once established. Choose a location with plenty of room to grow to accommodate its grand, spreading canopy. It adapts beautifully to almost any soil type, provided it doesn't waterlog. Pruning is rarely necessary, but if needed to shape or clear lower branches, it should be done in late autumn or winter while the tree is dormant to prevent bleeding sap. |
