Scots Pine Trees (Pinus sylvestris)

Price range: €300.00 through €550.00

Native Evergreen Beauty & Striking Architectural Structure

As Ireland’s only truly native pine tree, the Scots Pine is an iconic, highly adaptable evergreen that adds instant character, wildlife value, and year-round structure to any landscape. Famed for its distinctive blue-green needles and warm, orange-brown bark on mature upper branches, it stands out as a magnificent specimen tree, windbreak, or rugged shelterbelt component.

Thriving in poor, well-draining soils and fully exposed sites, the Scots Pine easily withstands harsh winters and strong coastal winds. It is a cornerstone species for native biodiversity, offering vital habitat and food for red squirrels, wild birds, and beneficial pollinators.

Description

Spacing & Planting Guide

  • Specimen Planting: Plant at least 5 m to 8 m away from other large trees or structures to allow its characteristic umbrella canopy to develop naturally.

  • Shelterbelts & Woodlands: Space 2 m to 3 m apart when planting in rows or mixed native forestry groups.

Planting & Care Guidelines

Planting

  1. Clear weeds, grass, and competing vegetation from around the planting pit.

  2. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the root system without bending or cramping the main taproot.

  3. Keep the root collar (where the trunk meets the roots) exactly level with the surrounding soil line.

  4. Backfill with natural soil, firming gently with your heel to remove air pockets.

  5. Stake young trees if planting on extremely windy or exposed hillsides to protect against wind-rock.

Maintenance

  • Watering: Water well upon planting. Once established, Scots Pine is exceptionally drought-tolerant and requires no extra watering.

  • Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter if necessary. Avoid heavy topping, as Scots Pine grows naturally with a strong central leader before forming its classic spreading crown.
