Native Irish Blossom & Spectacular Autumn Colour

The Wild Cherry, or Gean (Crann silín fiáin), is one of Ireland’s most breathtaking native deciduous trees. In early spring, it produces a mass of pure white, single blossoms before the leaves emerge, attracting early pollinators and signaling the arrival of the new season.

By late summer, small red-to-dark-purple cherries appear, providing a vital food source for wild birds. As autumn approaches, the foliage transforms into a vivid display of deep reds, oranges, and warm golds. Featuring smooth, reddish-brown bark with distinctive horizontal band markings, the Wild Cherry brings elegance, wildlife value, and seasonal interest to gardens, estate grounds, and native woodlands.

Description

Spacing & Planting Guide

  • Specimen Planting: Allow 6 m to 10 m between trees to let the canopy spread naturally into its traditional broad pyramid shape.

  • Hedgerows & Native Woodland: Space 2 m to 3 m apart when integrating into mixed native hedgerows or broadleaf forestry plots.

Planting & Care Guidelines

Planting

  1. Clear away grass, weeds, and debris from a 1-metre circle around the planting area.

  2. Dig a hole wide enough to comfortably spread the bare root system without overcrowding.

  3. Keep the root collar level with the surrounding soil surface.

  4. Backfill with soil, firming gently with your foot to eliminate air pockets.

  5. Stake young saplings in exposed, windy locations to keep the roots steady while establishing.

Maintenance

  • Pruning Window: Prune only in summer (July to August) if necessary. Avoid pruning in winter or wet weather to protect against silver leaf disease and bacterial canker.

  • Watering: Water regularly through the first full growing season until fully established.
