Whitethorn (Crataegus Monogyna)
Whitethorn hedging plants, also known as hawthorn are a fast growing, thorny native deciduous hedging plant with dark glossy green leaves. In spring, clusters of prominent scented white flowers come into leaf, followed by glossy red haws (berries) in autumn.
Planting Whitethorn Hedging
Whitethorn hedging can be planted in most soil types, needs to be planted 4 hedges to the yard for a single row and 6 hedges to the yard for a double row. A bareroot whitethorn can be planted from October to March.
How tall & fast will a Whitethorn Hedging grow?
A whitethorn hedge can grow 18-36 inches per year. The hedge can be grown up to 7-8 meters in height.
Maintenance of a Whitethorn Hedging
The hedge should be allowed to grow for the first two years and then cut back to allow it to thicken up. After this pruning should be done during the winter months when the hedge is dormant.
Our whitethorn hedges are bare root and lifted to order, they are bagged to keep fresh and ready for replanting. This hedge can be used in R.E.P.S and A.E.O.S schemes.
