Description
The Multistem Himalayan Birch (Betula utilis var. jacquemontii) is very similar to the native Silver Birch, but is grown with several stems rising from the base. This gives a fuller, more sculptural shape, and the bright white trunks stand out beautifully against evergreens and dark winter backdrops.
It has a light, open canopy of mid-green leaves that turn yellow in autumn, with yellow-brown catkins in spring. The white bark is the real feature: it is at its best in winter, when the bare stems provide colour and structure.
Why choose a Himalayan Birch?
- Gleaming white bark for striking winter colour
- Multiple stems give a natural, feature-tree look
- Light canopy allows underplanting with shade-tolerant plants
- Hardy and easy to grow in most Irish gardens
- Suits small gardens as a single tree, or larger gardens in groups
Planting advice: The Himalayan Birch can be planted in most soil types but will not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Plant in a sunny or lightly shaded position and keep well watered in the first year while it establishes.
