Description

Root-balled laurel hedging for an instant screen

Root-balled cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus ‘Rotundifolia’) gives you a tall, full evergreen hedge from day one. Our plants range from 3ft to 7ft, and are lifted with a ball of soil around the roots, so they establish well when planted at the right time. It is the quickest way to screen a boundary, hide a view or add privacy without waiting several years for smaller plants to grow. Hedging.ie is DAFM-registered, trading since 2011, and our laurel is sourced from trusted Irish growers.

Root-balled, potted or bare root laurel?

  • Root-balled (this page): large plants, 3ft to 7ft, for instant height and privacy.
  • Potted laurel: smaller plants from 1ft to 3ft+ that can be planted all year, best for gaps and smaller hedges.
  • Bare root laurel: the lowest price per plant, lifted while dormant from November to March, best for long hedges where a smaller starting size is fine.

How to plant root-balled laurel

Dig a hole about twice the width of the root ball and no deeper, and set the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the soil. Keep the root ball intact, remove any plastic or non-biodegradable wrap and loosen natural hessian at the top, backfill with soil and water well. Stake taller plants in exposed sites. Water regularly in dry spells during the first year. Plant soon after delivery so the root ball doesn’t dry out, and don’t plant into frozen or waterlogged ground.

Handling large plants

Root-balled plants are heavy. The larger sizes need two people, or a trolley, to move safely. Please make sure someone can receive the delivery and tell us about any access issues, such as narrow lanes or steps.

How fast will laurel grow?

Laurel grows roughly 12 to 24 inches (30 to 60cm) a year once established, fastest with regular watering in the first year. Larger plants start tall, so you may only need to trim rather than wait for height.

Pruning and maintenance

Trim laurel with secateurs, not hedge trimmers, so the large leaves aren’t cut in half and left brown at the edges. Prune in late spring to early summer, and lightly again in late summer. Remove weak or damaged growth, and feed in spring if growth is slow.
